About

Abbas Shafiei became a tragic figure in the wave of unrest sweeping across Iran, his life cut short in the aftermath of protests. On November 3, 2022 (12th of Aban 1401 in the Iranian calendar), during the fortieth day memorial of Hadith Najafi—a previous victim of the protests—Shafiei was severely injured in Karaj by the blows from batons and kicks from the boots of law enforcement officers. His injuries proved fatal, and he succumbed to them just two days later, his death adding another name to the growing list of those lost in the conflict between the government and its citizens calling for change.

In the days following his death, authorities held onto Shafiei’s body for a week, a distressing period for his family and a tactic seen by many as an attempt by the government to suppress the mounting public outcry and perhaps to deter further demonstrations. Eventually, his body was returned to his family, allowing them to finally mourn their loss and conduct his burial.

The story of Abbas Shafiei is a stark reminder of the harsh realities faced by many in Iran amidst the protests. His death not only signifies the personal tragedy for his family but also underscores the broader human rights concerns raised by the government’s response to the protests. The withholding of his body by the authorities highlights the additional layers of pain and complexity in the struggle for justice and accountability in Iran.
